Guardian takes ‘Build With Light’ studio on the road

Auburn Hills, Mich., February 2, 2010 – A new visual tool from Guardian Industries helps architects properly evaluate how different glass will truly look once installed on a project. It’s the popular Guardian SunGuard “Build With Light” trade show exhibit that is now portable on the “Build With Light” traveling glass studio.

Guardian’s SunGuard Build With Light glass studio allows architects to evaluate SunGuard advanced architectural glass under different light conditions. The studio simulates natural daylight and shows how the appearance of glass changes when viewed in transmitted and reflected light. Guardian architectural sales managers can take this portable demonstration directly into the architect’s office.

The Build With Light studio has been very well received. “The studio gives you a very good sense of what the glass would look like in place. In our office, our windows are tinted, so we have a disadvantage. It’s a great asset because we had nothing before but to hold it up to the light,” said Gene Schuler, principal, BSA Lifestructures Architects and Engineers.

“As architects, we hold glass up to light to see the quality of light that transmits through it, but we forget that reflectance comes off the glass on the exterior. The glass studio is a very good tool for architects to see a realistic representation of what glazing will look like from an exterior point of view. We can also put other framing materials – either curtainwalls or storefront frames – next to the glass so we can see all the colors on the outside of the building,” said Tom Ning, graduate architect, Schmidt Associates.

The traveling studio also demonstrates how light changes the appearance of coated products and how this should be taken into consideration in the design process.

“We want to provide architects with practical advice on how to talk to their clients about glass, and how to help them ‘see’ and appreciate a design concept,” said Chris Dolan, director of commercial glass programs for Guardian. “This is a great tool for us to show architects the true characteristics and aesthetics of glass right in their own office.”

The Guardian SunGuard program features an array of innovative, energy-saving commercial glass products.
